Abstract:

In the United States, the adoption of asset management frameworks in the water/wastewater industry is a recognized need to better handle the challenges posed by aging infrastructure, increasing demand, evolving regulatory requirements, and limited resources (staff, budget). These frameworks focus on maximizing asset performance, minimizing risk, meet regulatory compliance, optimizing cost-efficiency, and ensure service delivery to customers. These days, the water and wastewater industry can benefit from a variety of asset management frameworks available. However, having at least a general understanding of the different frameworks is very important to be able to identify which one best adapts to the needs of your utility, and to determine if adopting more than one is the most efficient way

In this webinar, speakers will provide an introduction and will discuss the key features of three widely employed Frameworks in the U.S. water/wastewater industry:

WERF/EPA Asset Management Framework: Speaker Dennis López

This methodology was developed by Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist the water and wastewater utilities in the asset management implementation journey. The Five core questions, the Ten- steps processes, and the related fundamental asset management concepts will be discussed.

IAM: Speaker Ahmet Ozman

The Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Anatomy provides a common language for asset management and helps organizations understand how to develop their capabilities. The IAM has developed a 6-box capabilities model (revised in 2024 as a 10-box model) which is aligned with the ISO5500X standard and the Asset Management Landscape by the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management (GFMAM).

IIMM: Speaker Brian Patrick Ball

The International Infrastructure Management Manual (IIMM), widely accepted as one of the leading international documents on infrastructure AM.  The ISO 55001:2014 spells out the requirements for the establishment, implementation, maintenance and improvement of a management system for AM and specifies “what” an organization needs to do to fulfil the Standards’ requirements. The IIMM provides detailed guidance on implementing asset management practices, particularly for infrastructure assets. It aligns with ISO 55000 standards, offering practical "how-to" advice.  The framework provided by IIMM is structured to provide both strategic and operational guidance, making it a valuable resource for both high-level planning and day-to-day management.
